Ya busque en google, creanme que si, tes problema lo tuve antes con el ubuntu y ahora con el debian.
La reoslucion maxima que me permitia era de 800x600, hice una modificacion al xorg.config y ahora me permite usar 832x624 pero es casi lo mismo.
Aqui dejo mi xorg.confg antes de modificarlo

Segun mi cpu tengo 11 mb de memoria compartida para video, mmm hasta ahora solo he podido poner la resolucion adecuada en ubuntu edgy, por eso no salia de ahi 
Intente con el comando
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
lo configure, le asigne mas memoria a mi tarjeta de video y seleccione las resolciones que soporta mi monitor...fue lo mismo, no cambio en nada :s alguna otr idea? porque yo ya intente todo lo que sabia
Espero cualquier comentario.. Saludos

puede que tambien sea de que no le has instalado correctamente los drivers a tu tarjeta de video

saliendome del tema un poco Arriba Mi Tachira!!!! Vamos por la sexta!!!
y ya entrando de nuevo en linux, con esa tarjeta no te deberia dar problemas, pero la mia es viejita, es integrada y no hay driver mas que los que trae la misma distro...

si es por el Deportivo Tachira jaja
En Preferencias-->Resolucion de pantalla me sale solo 800x600 y otra aun mas baja, ni cambiando la taza de referesco

xDD ok! intenta denuevo con dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg porque es raro que no te tome esa resolucion si hasta con mi pc viejo que solo tenia 32mb de video incorporado agarraba esa resolucion

Hay un paquete para intel, (no recuerdo el nombre) que soluciona el problema de la resolucion.

Supongo que poniendo en el buscador de synaptic intel, y mirando la descipcion de los paqueteslo podras encontrar, o si no alguien que tenga una intel, dice como se llama el paquete

el paquete para las intel se llama 915resolution, pero tenes que fijarte si esta soportada tu tarjeta, esta en los repositorios

bueno no encontre drives para mi tarjeta en la pagina de intel, solo hay para windows.
en sinaptic encontre el 915resolution pero no v en ninguna parte que apareciera mi tarjeta, tambien que no puedo intentar mucho ya que como me era muy incomodo trabajar con esa resolucion tuve que migrar a ubuntu edgy (feisty tampoco me da la resulucion).
no creo que sea mi archivo de xorg.conf porque hice una copia de este y cuando instale el feisty lo sustitui e igual lo maximo de resolucion era 800x600.
Creo que debe estar en la asignacion de memoria a la TV, le asigne 36mb y con todo y eso no me solucionaba nada.
La unica manera que veo es esperar a que llegue mi pc nueva. Debe ser algo del kernel mas actual o el gnome
